There is no doubt that Albania has been a winemaking country since ancient times, known for its vineyards spread on its gentle hills. A blessed country, Albania is home to excellent and unique Mediterranean wines, with an ampelographic heritage telling the oenological history of our country. Clashes between gladiators, generals, armies, wars coming one after the other, all have been accompanied by the best of the companions — the wine — amidst the hotbeds of power. It was exactly this need for the vineyard that came to my mind while thinking of a way to encourage you to follow this journey, to visit the wineries and taste the wine of Albanian producers.
Wine production is both an art and a science, a mixture of individual creativity with innovative technology. Thanks to its geographical position, number of sunny days, fertile soil and indigenous varieties, Albania offers a high quality of wine production, making it a competitive industry in the region and beyond. This has come as a result of building vineyards capacity and processing capacities of the wineries.
The main varieties of Albanian autochthonous grapes for red wine are Shesh i Zi, Kallmet, Vlosh, Serina, Debinë e Zezë, while among the white wines it is worth mentioning Shesh i Bardhe, Debinë e Bardhë, Pula, Therepelë etc., appreciated for their fruity and floral aroma. Kallmet, named after the sweet grape variety, is used to produce both red and white wine, and has also won numerous awards, including Kallmet‘s 30-year-old wine.
The wine industry is rather diverse. Important regions of the country for wine production are Berat, Elbasan, Vlora, Fieri, and Lezha. The regions with the best reputation for quality wines are Berat, Përmeti and Lezha. Berat is the most important region for wine production in Albania, housing most of the wineries of the country. Lezha houses several wineries as well, but it is mostly related to Kallmet grape variety, with the main area for the production of Kallmet located in this region and highly appreciated by the Albanian consumers.
