We start our journey to the land of citrus, the country which seems to have ‘grabbed’ the crown of reigning when it comes to the production of tangerines, oranges, lemons, citrus and leads in exports of regional and European markets.
Citrus production in Albania dates back to the Middle Ages, the cultivation of which was done along the coast. After the Liberation, during the Communist regime, massive citrus plantations were built in Albania. The areas where they were located are Ksamili, Lukova, Vlora (Jonufër), in Stiar and Vrinë of Saranda, etc. These areas are related to the history of the-then youth who carried out national actions for laying the foundations for planting such trees.
The journey begins in the place where every year, in October, the Feast of Tangerines is celebrated, where the whole area is covered with vineyards, where citrus plantations buzz and recognise no end, well on the beautiful and colourful shores of Saranda. During this trip one will have the opportunity to stop and visit the farms where citrus fruits are grown. In these magical oases one will be able to enjoy jams and glikos with oranges and tangerines.
Autumn is recommended as the most suitable period, because of the incomparable opportunities that farms offer to participate in the seasonal citrus harvesting activities. This way everyone can take part in the biggest celebration — that of mandarin harvesting. There you will meet many farmers who are passionate about citrus, work, traditions, the natural beauty that this sweet gem of the Ionian coast offers.
